Guess what? I’ve just invented a new sport. (Or maybe I’ve just given a name to sth. we all know. ;-) ) I call it happy skipping and I’m planning to take over the world spread it all over the world. That’s why I’m writing this page in english.

So. What is happy skipping?

Do you remember, when you were a kid and you’d jump and skip around, just because you felt happy and felt the need to move or else you’d burst from joy? That’s the kind of skipping I’m talking about.

Like this for example:

(Found on youtube, all copyright with the creator of this animation)

And you know what? That’s just about all there is to it. Don’t walk, don’t run, just skip along to any tune you like.

Positive Aspects of happy skipping:

  • Makes you happy (of course, thus the name)
  • Makes a nice workout
  • Makes you happy.
  • Is so much fun, you won’t believe it.
  • Makes you happy.

Possible negative aspects:

  • Might (alright does) look rather silly, but hey, who cares?

See, the positive aspects are overwhelming. And I’m absolutely serious.

Why skip?

Well it’s a natural thing. Kids do it. Quite often actually, unless they’re told to stand still or get old enough to worry about their coolness. And isn’t it a pity that we’re restricting ourselves from doing something that’s that much fun just because we’re worried about what other people might think?

How to start.

  1. Get yourself an mp3-player. Any player will do, just no hard disk player or cd-player. These don’t take the skipping too well.
  2. Add your favourite music. Upbeat tunes will be the obvious choice, but chose whatever you like – it’s your fun time.
  3. Wear comfortable clothing – as you would for jogging. The better the cushioning of your shoes, the bigger the fun, and probably the lesser the risk of stressing your joints.
  4. Roll the music.
  5. Start skipping along the street/path/hallway.

It’s just as easy as it sounds. You don’t need a rope or anything else. You can skip however and wherever you like. Skip on one foot or on both, skip around or on paving tiles. You might want to add a little hip-twist if you like, or a turn every once in a while, jump up on a rock/bench/curb, jump back down again. Do whatever you want to. Or even bust some dance moves if you feel like it.

You’ll feel yourself relax really soon, your body will get a nice workout and after a short while you’ll find yourself smiling.

People might think or even tell you that you’re slightly insane (but in a very nice, harmless way) but in fact, they’re just jealous of your happyness. And if you manage to make them smile, count it as your good deed for today.

Not recommended for:

Teenagers in high school with their life centering around their image in school. These might consider wearing some kind of disguise to protect their coolness-factor.

Very recommended for:

Anyone else who might need to relieve stress, get moving, wants more fun in live and is still in touch with their inner child but grown up enough not to care what strangers might think about them.

Well. That’s it. That’s happy skipping for you. Now go out, start skipping, spread the word and if you’re having fun skipping around, please leave a comment.
